    Cordless phones

I have been a cordless phone user for the majority of my life. Given that I am in my early 30′s it stands to reason that most people my age have been as well. There will always be that one story of a friend in a group that still has a single rotary phone in the house… makes me smile.

My parents went through a number of brands and so have my wife and I since being together. Our latest model is more than a year old but still in very good shape. It was a really popular model at the time made by Panasonic, came with 3 handsets, 3 chargers and the handsets would also act as intercom units to each other. The set that my wife and I had before that was also a Panasonic but it was a 2 unit model with similar features. We actually still have the other set but their batteries are finished and that was the main reason for the upgrade.

The big question and the reason for which I am writing this article is “How come my old 900mhz phones are so much better that my new 5.4 Ghz phones?”. Well I did some google searching and some investigating and from what they say in this article it seems that there is a few more variables than just the frequency.

“There are 3 main factors that affect the quality and strength of a cordless phone’s signal: traffic, how the frequency handles obstructions, and output wattage.” says Jim Hanks, the author of the article. That means that even though most of the marketing surrounding a phone upgrade or their performance is concentrated on the frequency, there is a real possibility that you don’t see an improvement or perhaps even worse; you notice deterioration.

This is what we have seen with our newest of the phone sets. Both Panasonic, both very good phones, but we notice that the audio quality and signal distance at which is operates is much better with our old 900mhz units.

The reason I brought this up is because we all talked about the frequency questions 5-10 years ago but if you are looking for a phone now, I recommend buying from a reputable store that will accept a return if you are not satisfied.

Happy calling, don’t let the phone bills get out of hand!

    • Blaw… I am so tired from work around the house. I feel so tech deprived. I like a nice house, but the manual labour kills me :) #
    • Off to bed! #
    • Morning has come. Up and about getting ready for work. #
    • At work… ‘Was thinking before getting here that I need to put my content back on http://undo.tv. I wonder how much traffic they get now. #
    • Back from lunch… #
    • Check out http://undo.tv. I have a post coming along about the site and how I hope it will help launch my blog. #
    • ooo… just registered thesleepygeek.com. Now I can put the blog in it’s rightful place! #
    • ahh man… that was to easy. Everyone go check out http//www.thesleepygeek.com. The blog is moved and it all works (that I can see) :) #
    • Time to get moving. Homeward bound. Love the fact that my website is up with it’s own domain! http://www.thesleepygeek.com. Check it out! #
    • Back at home. Supper was breakfast and supper was yummy. Go HABS GO! #

It’s done. I have decided to officially go with The Sleepy Geek as a persona. The website is http://www.thesleepygeek.com and that’s where I am going to host ‘le blog’. Yay! It’s an exciting moment because this is a big milestone in the quest to build The Sleepy Geek world.

Now all of you need to come and read my fun articles about my lack of sleep. Maybe you all need some Valium to slow down to my speed. We’ll have to see.

Enough fluff! How did I do it? Well I went with my domain hosting company who offers great rates for registration. I am using Dreamhost currently. I haven’t found any better out there and I don’t have any sponsors yet so it’s an unbiased plug. Currently they are hosting this site and a couple of personal sites that I have for family pictures and what not. “Yeah, yeah, yeah… HOW MUCH???”. They are offering domain registrations for $10 USD per year right now. I have heard of some companies charging $6-8, but ease of having my domains and space hosted by the same people is worth the couple of dollars.

So welcome to one and all. This is really the first post to the blog with the new domain. You are witnessing HISTORY! Okay, we’ll see ’bout that!

I have decided that with my starting to blog again that I will also start uploading my posts to http://undo.tv. I fell in love with the idea of the site when I heard that a large number of TechTV alumni would be sharing their online media through one place. I have been a fan of a lot of their work on TV and as well online and having a lot if not most of it in one location is nice.

A good thing about undo.tv is that they allow other content providers to publish their efforts on the site as well. I like the fact that I can place my content with others that I feel are publishing a high quality product. As of now I plan to keep my publications to undo.tv simply a copy of my blog posts. What this is allowing me to do is potentially generate interest in my blog.

I have had a hosted space for quite some time and now wish to start really concentrating on building relationships. The thing that I wonder is, by posting my material to undo.tv and I generating traffic to that site or will the people come? (that’s a movie reference!)

    Come check it out… www.thesleepygeek.com!

    Bowling League Software

Do you happen to bowl? I am sure that I am the minority here but being that finding software to run a bowling league is a challenge, I wanted to mention it. I personally use Perfect Secretary by Treasure Software. Bowling software can be quite complex. The ability to take the weekly stats and organize them and process them into a meaningful report is key. There are many ways to organize a league by how the points are awarded and how the averages and handicaps are calculated. Being flexible and having more options is what makes Perfect Secretary a great option.

To give you an idea of how flexible the software is, let me give you a glimpse of how our league calculates data. We have awards for highest average, high scratch single (scratch is without handicap). high scratch triple (triple is your 3 games for the night), high handicap single and high handicap triple. A lot of leagues will give more than one award to the same bowler. In our league we do not give out more than one award per bowler. So if you win one of them, you are not elligable for another. Perfect Secretary excels at these types of small adjustments having an option to sort based on an award priority. This is just an example, there are many more!

The only con that I see is the pricing. They have a league size based licensing scheme that I am not fond of. The larger your league is the more it will cost. They release versions every year with new features, however if you want to upgrade and you have a larger league it will up the price.
