AT&T’s Retort To Verizon’s Claim Of Better Coverage

AT&T’s Retort To Verizon’s Claim Of Better Coverage

(update: if you get this twice on RSS I apologize! This post created a problem on my main page for some reason!)

We have all seen the “There Is A Map For That” campaign that Verizon has been pushing the last month or more. If not, here is what they are claiming!

There Is A Map For That

I have been waiting for a while to see if AT&T would respond to the claims that Verizon were making. A kind of Apple/Microsoft duel of sorts. And to my amusement, they have but the problem is that it wasn’t it an advertisement. Well not yet anyway!

To Our Customers:

As the U.S. market leader in wireless data service, we typically don’t respond to competitors’ advertising. However, some recent ads from Verizon are so blatantly false and misleading, that we want to set the record straight about AT&T’s wireless data coverage.

The key facts are:

  • AT&T’s wireless data coverage reaches 303 million people – or 97% of the U.S. population, where they live and work. Our data coverage consists of 3 different types of technology:
    • 3G. 233 million people or 75% of the population are covered by AT&T’s 3G network, the nation’s fastest.
    • EDGE. 301 million people or more than 96% of the population are covered by EDGE.
      • With both 3G and EDGE coverage, customers can access the Internet, send e-mail, surf the Web, stream music, download videos, send photos, text, talk and more. The only difference – with some data applications, 3G is faster than EDGE
    • GPRS. Covers 303 million people, allowing you to talk, text, e-mail and access basic websites optimized for wireless.

AT&T is the #1 network for smartphones, with twice the number of smartphone customers than Verizon, our closest competitor. Some of the reasons include:

Most popular smartphones. Unlike Verizon, AT&T offers the most popular smartphones in the industry.

More wireless apps. Unlike Verizon, AT&T customers have access to more than 100,000 applications, more than with any other wireless company.

Talk and E-mail at the same time. Unlike Verizon, AT&T’s 3G network lets wireless customers simultaneously talk and surf the web or do e-mail.

Fastest 3G in the nation. Unlike Verizon, AT&T has the nation’s fastest 3G network.

Thank you for allowing us to set the record straight. We appreciate your business and will continue to work hard to deliver the best wireless data experience in the industry.

Your AT&T Team

Not a bad response. I also have read that they are suing Verizon for the claims stating that they are false.

Thanks for the entertainment guys!

How can Verizon be wrong? Their campaign specifically targets 3G coverage, not EDGE. AT&T’s claim to cover 75% of the population is evidenced only by where their coverage is – the heaviest population centers. But, heaven forbid you live in the upper middle part of the country, the southwest or parts of the southeast.
Verizon is showing two maps and clearly their 3G coverage is more encompassing of the continental US. I don’t see how that is “false advertising”.

I agree that Verizon is in the right comparing 3G coverage to 3G coverage. It would definitely be wrong for AT&T to compare their entire coverage map to Verizon’s because they are 2 different technologies. AT&T does not offer 3G coverage in all its zones while Verizon does. A bit of an apples and oranges situation.

Having said that, when the lay person sees this ad, they see coverage. They don’t know what 3G coverage means and so this could be misleading. Caveat emptor U suppose but it is a bit of a trick on their part.

I really think that AT&T needs to leave this out of the courts and design a better ad campaign against it, but I just hope they don’t do what MS did with Apple. Those were a complete FAIL.

Oh, and thanks for the comment!!! Love it :)
