I admit that I completely unplugged while I was off for the holidays. I spent time celebrating with family and when that was over, myself and my immediate family just vegged and spent some time together – it was awesome! It even got to the point that my Blackberry battery was dead because I just left the phone on the counter!
That being said, it’s nice to be back and I have spent some time in the last couple of days catching up to what is in the news. I do read a lot of blogs and news sites that are related to Apple in some way and it seems they still only have what they are calling the iSlate to talk about. It seems like it will be a slick device but will it be worth $1k? I have used a lot of tablets due to my 9-5 and they have never really caught my geek nerve. Cool to write on for the first few minutes but not fast enough to be useful for me – I can type faster. That being said; Apple has a knack for changing the way we think about something that we all have given up on and making it useful in a new way. Can’t wait to see one :)
I have also seen a bunch of Top 10 lists. They are great but there is a lot of repetition out there and I am started skipping them in my Google Reader. Shame on me! What little cash we had before Christmas went the way of gifts and so I am not in the position to buy more right now.
Christmas itself was great like I said above. Geek wise I got a few cool things and one really cool thing coming. I was able to score an HP C309a printer from Best Buy for $150CAN down from $350 on Boxing Day (Canada’s day after Christmas best sale day of the year – something like Black Friday). I love the fact that it’s wireless and we have discretely placed it in a corner upstairs where we normally are using the laptops rather than in the basement where the server and network connections are. Very handy that wireless printing I tell yah!
As a family we finally got a Wii from Santa. I think he’s been holding out on us because they kids were really young but now my son is 5 going on 6 and Wii it is. We had a blast playing Mario Kart while we were all off together and also got a Wii Fit Plus from my brother-in-law and sister-in-law (crazy cool gift!). Hopefully my wife and I can get in to a routine that has the Fit involved after the kids are in bed. We’ll see!
As for what is coming? You guess it! My Nikon DSLR camera. I have been aching for one for a few years and was given some money towards it this year which makes it all possible (thanks for those donations!). I hope to get the D5000 but am shopping around hard core. It might not be possible and I might have to settle for the D3000 but both are great entry level DSLR cameras and I would have a blast with either.
I hope your holidays were good and you also had a chance to relax – what ever way you could.
And of course I hope you had a chance to – GEEK ON!

Maybe it’s just me, but I believe there are many differences between the expression and characteristics of a “Geek” and a “Nerd”. Obviously, the typical nerd does not compare to the status of a geek today – but what are they?
