I came across this page (http://www.geekcode.com/geek.html) while reading through my regular sites and thought it was worth a mention. I am all for this kind of thing. I have a printed out Initech TPS Report cover sheet hanging on my cubicle wall along with another sheet reading “There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary, and those who don’t”.

It’s nice to know there are other people in the world with the same interests and can talk the same language. After all we are a ‘special’ bunch. I try to keep my posts clean of too much geekness but let’s be honest… There are times when my wife, with the best intentions will ask a detailed question about why my day was good or bad and then I get to watch her eyes glaze over while I tell her. :) Kudos to her!

To get your geek code you need to read through the page and manually write it out. Only a true geek would take the 5 minutes :)

I have had my own blog for quite some time now and I am doing my best to post often and post good content. In an effort to generate traffic I think I took an over zealous approach today. Since the beginning of March, possibly end of February I have been writing at a pretty good pace and then also uploading my articles to what seems like a dead site. That would be undo.tv. The site has a really good setup allowing people to post their articles in a central location.

Today I started to upload my blog posts that I create for my own site to the Lockergnome site. Chris has done a really good job of turning the site into a community blogging mecca. I really like the way that the main page displays some of the most recent posts from its contributors. So I decided that I would add my link to the posts. After all I am “TheSleepyGeek” (I have intentionally left out the link… read on) and I want people to see my articles wherever they are posted. I am trying to build a name for myself, so why wouldn’t I add my link for people to come see me?

I think I missed the point of Chris’ website. Lockergnome is a place for people to come and post their blog, not for them to repost their blog. I will still post to my own blog and update to my Lockergnome profile but I will do so transparently.

Chris sent me a note on one of my posts letting me know nicely that there is no need for me to link to my site every time I post. To tell you the truth given the purpose of the site, I agree. My apologies :P

So be careful not to step on anyone else’s toes. I only write this article so that we can all learn from my mistake. Be careful how you try to generate traffic. If you build it, it will come. Be patient.

Why am I The Sleepy Geek?

Today is one of those days. We had a busy weekend. It was a great weekend and I am not complaining at all. But even though the cottage is a place of relaxation and peace, it still takes a lot of work to get it up and running. Saturday I woke up to the sound of the water pump running. Still in a daze in the wee hours of the morning, I went downstairs to find that the pipe connecting the pump to the tank was blown. Time for a trip into town. We got the docks in and the boat in after lunch. The boat ran well but by the time it was in and parked the rain moved in. It wasn’t a big problem because it was time to cook supper, one of my favorite things to do.

Sunday was a slower day but by the end of the day our daughter of 17 months was not feeling so well. We decided to stay the night up north and see if it was maybe something she ate, but no luck. So we headed home early on Monday morning.

Last night was long. My wife gets the worst of it though, babies always want mommy when they are sick. Can’t blame them really :)

So I am at work, sleepy… doing geeky stuff. I believe that when I get home it will be supper and then get the kids to sleep. Then I will probably have to work on some repairs I have.

I am now 5th on the search page when I type in my name in its entirety. The top 5 all have something to do with me and not any other Marcus Hamaker but some of them are really REALLY old. I have had a BBS in my past and that is still the number one result. I think that will take the longest to bounce out of my way for the quest to have TheSleepyGeek #1.

I just did a search for “sleepy geek” and for some reason the about page is showing from the old URL. Either way though most people will catch that. I am sure that it won’t be long before that disappears because the URL doesn’t exist any longer.

So how to get TheSleepGeek in the number one search spot for Google? Not sure, but I think that if there are more searches for my name that people actually click on then it will help. I am also going to go try and poke the Google bots a little. Not sure this will help.
