I gave this a quick whirl just because I knew they were cutting down my tree. It’s not perfect because the camera moved in the middle but it’s still cool to see.
How entertaining. Something cool for a Friday afternoon.
Have a good weekend!
Gook on.

As most of my readers know – I am the proud owner of a new Nikon D5000… Yay!
One of the features on the camera is integrated interval shooting. This means that you can set it to take a picture every x seconds/minutes/hours. I doubt that I will use this all that often but I wanted to give it a shot and here’s what I came up with.
When I first heard about this I was really surprised that we needed the translation results quicker than Google was already dishing them out. I mean how hard is it to type your text, press translate and see the results? Not hard at all.
But then I watched the video… and Google has just made a simple change which makes the page flow cleaner. I took a quick look at the site and when I translate something with no real purpose I usually go English to Dutch as my father is from Holland. I spent most of my youth listening to him and my Oma talking to each other and wish I could speak it now.
A quick type in the box and I got this: Dit is leuk. Ik wou dat ik kon spreken Nederlands!
That got me thinking really. They need to make this a mobile app. Put this on all the iPhones and Blackberries out there and you replace all the pocket translators in a second!
If you are also daring enough to trust Google outright, you could use this to learn common phrases of a language and teach yourself how to speak it. Good luck with the accent though.
Take a look at the video, it’s a fun view :)
Happy translating,
Geek on!
I was working on optimizing my site a little again and I had been told by a couple of people that inactive WordPress Plugins tend to slow the site loading time slightly. I had a chance last night to go to some website load time testing pages (such as http://www.websitegoodies.com/tools/speed-test.php) and on average it was taking ~14 seconds to completelty load the page. Now this is pretty aweful if you look at the number itself but the majority of the website is loaded much faster than that. There are certainly things still loading but most are plugins that are accessing external sources.
So off I went and started to review what plugins I might want to keep and which were just a test to see if I liked it. After looking at my list with the intention of deleting the dead weight I was amazed that all of the plugins that I wasn’t actually running live were garbage. So a select-all and delete it was! A quick check back with the speed testing sites and now I am averaging a load time in the neighbourhood of 11 seconds. Still not optimal but a definate part of the problem.
Happy blogging lads!
… the problem with this of course; is that 90% of them wouldn’t ever answer the question and a good portion of those probably wouldn’t read the question. I suppose it’s every blogger’s dream to know that. Then you can make sure to post and include the information that readers are looking for.
Strangely enough my posting has been erratic at best lately. I know, I know… I realize how often I post these days, and most recently it has been slower plus I have had a cold from hell. So most readers know that I had big plans in the fall to set up a live video stream on the website and stream myself 24/7 for the masses. Well it turns out that it takes a lot of time to gain viewership and maintain it. You would think that I could have come up with that before investing all the time in the setup of the stream, but I guess that was also part of the fun for me; twas a true geek maneuver.
Now I have my head geared towards podcasting. I am not 100% sure of format or topic yet, but of course it will have to do with technology – no question there. There are so many podcasts out there that are very topic specific that I think it would be difficult to try and spin a “general technology” podcast from an unknown creator. Let’s face it (more talking to myself here I suppose) I really have never created anything published, so I am definately unknown in the podcasting world.
I think I am going to try and come up with a few different ideas with a subject and description, then post it back up here and ask for feedback. What is missing or what is it that I am so interested in that I think I can do it better than the rest of the world :P
Uh oh, could be a long list…. Mwahahaha.
I didn’t do much that was geeky this weekend. I spent it taking a trip to Toronto to visit some family, which was nice. However I did use my GPS a lot over the 2 days.
I know how to get to my wife’s uncle and aunt’s house without the GPS but it offers so much more than just turn by turn directions. If you don’t know where you are going that can be the most important feature but it’s also very nice for giving you the exact speed at which you’re rolling, a pretty good estimated time of arrival and when you need to find a point of interest there is no better tool.
I have known for a while that my speedometer is not quite 100% accurate so I use the TomTom to set my cruise control almost every time on a long trip. It’s a nice way of knowing what your speeding ticket will cost. *GASP* Also while traveling with the kids it is handy to have a way to find a washroom fast. There is always that looming “I have to pee” waiting to come from the back seat :)
We also took a trip to my wife’s cousin’s place to which we have never been before. This was once of the first times I have ever blindly taken an address, entered it in the GPS and followed the instructions. It worked great. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes to arrive at our destination which was what we were told it would take. When leaving there we were heading home back in Montreal so we put that in and it gave us a route around Toronto which was nice because we avoided the city traffic.
At this point most of the GPS units out there are about the same in quality. TomTom and Garmin are really popular names, it’s up to you to decide if it has the features you want. If it does, BUY ONE!
Happy driving…
